Interview With a ScribeQ: Is being a scribe easy?
A: No. It's a very hard job that takes a lot of time. Q: What types of tools do you use in this job? A: Well, I use a reed dipped in black ink as a pen to write with and I use papyrus sheets to write on. Q: How did you become a scribe? A: Oh, they usually had to be men and they were the son of a scribe most of the time. You had to go to a special scribe school for 4-5 years to become a scribe. http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/writing/explore/scribe.html Inside Info From the Scribe - How to Make Paper First, you had to get a papyrus plant. You could find this plant anywhere near the Nile river and in most places around Egypt. The outside layer of the stem has to be removed. Then, the inner layer of the plant is sliced into long strips and placed side by side with a second layer on top at a right angle. Then the whole thing is soaked in water and pressed under a heavy rock for 21 days. The juice of the plant acts like glue and fastened the strips together. The outcome is a sheet, which is hammered flat and dried in the sun. http://www.kidzworld.com/article/1074-egypt-ancient-paper-papyrus Interview With a FarmerQ: How did you know when floods came?
A: Us farmers noticed a pattern for what time of year the floods from the Nile came. We wrote the time down and it also created the idea of a calender. Now, we know exactly when the floods are going to come, when the land dries, and when it's best to plant our seeds. Q: How important were you to Ancient Egypt? A: Very important. Not to brag or anything but farmers were one of the most important people because we provided food so everyone could live and if we farmed well, we would get a surplus amount of food or grain that we could trade for other goods. |
